Huffing and Puffing

Day three at Rodanthe, N.C., and I finally have caught my first fish. They're not the bluefish I keep hoping for, but my dad and I slaughtered the puffer fish or blowfish here on the Rodanthe Pier.

After a slow start, we started catching the little guys left and right, and on pretty much everything. We were using our surf rods and spinning reels with a traditional bottom rig. We caught them on every kind of bait we had: squid, blood worms, shrimp, and sand fleas.

My dad and I are saying that we each caught six. I think we probably reeled in more than that, giving them to another angler on the pier who loved filleting them and eating them.

My pap, who is a sheepshead expert from his months in Florida, was effortlessly trying to get one of the zebra-striped fish to hit. We saw quite a few around the pier pilings, but could not get them to hit on anything.

We're still hoping for a great bluefish run here, but I'm happy that I got the monkey off my back and finally caught a fish!
