Liberal plants of hatchery trout make Fan Lake a good bet for anglers who want to get away from most of the crowds to do their trout fishing. Although not overlooked by local anglers, Fan certainly doesn't get the fishing pressure of the bigger and better- known trout lakes in the Stevens/Spokane/Pend Oreille counties area. The ban on gas-powered boats may be part of the reason, or maybe it's the fact that Fan Lake closes to fishing at the end of September, a month earlier than most other lakes in the area. Whatever the reason, you'll find less competition and decent trout fishing. I think it's just about perfect for evening fly-fishing, but feel free to take along your hardware or bait; it all works here.

Take U.S. 2 north from Spokane for 20 miles and turn east (left) on Eloika Lake Road. After about three miles, the road makes a 90-degree left, then a 90-degree right, and another 90-degree left. At that second left, bear right onto the gravel side road that leads about 1.5 miles to Fan Lake.
