St. Marks Specs

Spotted seatrout, or specs are they're known locally, are a favorite target throughout Apalachee Bay. The lush seagrass flats, tidal creeks and oyster bars provide perfect habitat for fish to grew up to double-digit size. Specs will readily take DOA shrimp or jerk baits, Hall 'Em In topwater plugs or flies like a Cook's Critter or Clouser Minnow.

About Captain Dave Lear

I live to fish and fish to live. I've been working in the marine industry for the last two decades as a magazine writer/editor at titles like Salt Water Sportsman and I'm also a passionate conservation advocate. I worked for the Coastal Conservation Association as the communications director for the Net Ban campaign. In the course of all that I've fished all around Florida, Cuba, the Caribbean and the gulf side of Mexico, and I've earned a membership in the IGFA Billfish Royal Slam Club, yet I'm equally bonkers about whipping a big red on 4-pound-test or putting a fly on a tarpon's nose.
