2011 DOA Writer’s Festival

Local ringer Capt. Richard Martinuek was my guide during the first day of this annual event, which is hosted by DOA Lures and River Palm Cottages. Richard and I were fishing the Roosevelt and 10-Cent bridges in Stuart with Gerry Benedicto of Seagur Leader when I landed this 32-inch snook, taken on a Golden Bream Terroreyz on a 3/8-ounce jig head. Richard added another 31-incher and lost a couple monsters to the rubble below. We also had shots at rolling tarpon and Gerry caught his first ever jack crevalle.
The next morning I joined long-time friends Capt. Rick Grassett of Sarasota and Rusty Chinnis of Longboat Key for more action. We caught a couple 24-inch snook around the inlet, had more shots at tarpon and finished up with this brace of trout on the grass flats. They were both fooled by DOA 1/2-ounce holographic shrimp.

It was a great event once again, bringing together writers, photographers, guides and sponsors from all over the country to beautiful Jensen Beach. A special thanks to Capt. Mark Nichols and Jerry McBride of DOA Lures for their hospitality and to the sponsors who help make this such a fun time every year.

About Captain Dave Lear

I live to fish and fish to live. I've been working in the marine industry for the last two decades as a magazine writer/editor at titles like Salt Water Sportsman and I'm also a passionate conservation advocate. I worked for the Coastal Conservation Association as the communications director for the Net Ban campaign. In the course of all that I've fished all around Florida, Cuba, the Caribbean and the gulf side of Mexico, and I've earned a membership in the IGFA Billfish Royal Slam Club, yet I'm equally bonkers about whipping a big red on 4-pound-test or putting a fly on a tarpon's nose.
