It took a while, but the first striped marlin and yellowfin tuna of the new sport fishing season were caught off the coast of New Zealand.
The fish typically show up earlier, but a strange season took a while to begin. On January 4, Guy Sutherland tagged and released the first striped marlin. He caught the fish near the Three Kings Islands, northwest of the mainland.
The first striped marlin was weighed in the next day, and the first black marlin two days later, by Beni Hafoka, according to Stuff.com. David Osborne can brag about having caught the first yellowfin, a 120-pound fish. Here's hoping the season keeps getting better, and congratulations to all the anglers. – Rick Bach
