Commercial overfishing is one of the biggest hurdles that recreational anglers face. Not only do the deplete fisheries, but they also bring harsh regulations and closures.
Two researchers from the University of British Columbia have analyzed figures from countries with major fishing industries in the world's oceans and combined them with economic figures from the various industries with fish population growth rates, to identify six areas at risk of being made "barren" by greedy overfishing.
The regions are off the coast of Baja, Mexico; Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada; Peru and Ecuador; Southeast Africa; New Zealand; and Antarctica.
The two researchers, William Cheung and Rashid Sumaila, hope that their findings will help bring tighter restrictions in these areas to lead to sustainable fishing practices. Hopefully recreational fishing will be part of their solutions. –Brian McClintock
