New Zealand is a trout fisherman's paradise, and one young angler hauled in a brownie any angler would covet to catch.
From the Taranaki Daily News:
For the second year in a row, Mackenzie Stewart has bragging rights over some of Taranaki's keenest anglers.
The New Plymouth eight-year-old made a cracking start to the trout fishing season, reeling in a 3.4kg brown trout yesterday.
"My arms are still sore," she said, holding her fish up for the camera.
"They got sore halfway through winding it in."
The brown beauty was a step up from last year's effort when Mackenzie caught a 1.9kg fish in the Waiwhakaiho River.
Neither the pint-sized angler nor her dad, Glenn Stewart, were willing to cough up the details on where this one was landed.
"Just say Stratford," Mr Stewart called from the back of the garage where the weigh-in was held.
The trout season started on October 1 and runs until April 30, giving the other 50-odd club members plenty of time to nab a bigger fish than Mackenzie's.
However, it would hardly be shooting fish in a barrel, Mr Stewart said.
"That's a trophy fish – she'll never catch another one that size in Taranaki."
