76-Pound Yellow Catfish Landed in Trinity River

James Pruett had some perch tied onto his trotline when a massive yellow catfish (more commonly known as a flathead) slammed his bait. Pruett was checking his trotline in his 16-foot aluminum boat when he hauled in the 76-pounder while fishing the Trinity River on Sunday, April 15.

“He took about 30 minutes to land,” said Pruett to YourHoustonNews.com. “I was pretty excited. I was fishing by myself. When I got him, the tip of the boat went in a little bit and water got in the boat. I bear-hugged him to bring him in.”

The state record flathead is 98.5 pounds landed in Palestine Lake in 1998.

Pruett kept the fish, his personal best, and had a fish fry, keeping the head for a trophy. –Brian McClintock
