For the past couple of weeks, people have been trying to figure out what exactly is this cloak-like figure floating in the depths of an unidentified ocean.
Some believed it could be whale placenta, but it has now clearly been identified as an “enigmatic deep-sea jellyfish.” According to Gawker, the jellyfish was first discovered in 1967 by Sir Frederick Stratten Russell. The jellyfish is identified with “On opposite sides of the umbrella are two large tubular shaped processes…It has a yellowish brown tinge…The radial canal system is most striking. It consists of a meshwork, likened by Dr. Barham to wire-netting.”
Also, “The gonads are situated along the margins of fan-shape mesenteries, and tend to be broken up into several isolated processes with incurved edges.” As we sure you were wondering.
The video is pretty awesome. -Brian McClintock
