Kayaker Plunges 189 Feet Down Palouse Falls in Washington State

Palouse Falls are 24 feet taller than Niagara, and Rafael Ortiz of Mexico knows all 189 feet of Palouse.

On April 25, Ortiz took his kayak down the falls, being only the second person to survive the ultimate kayak adventure. It’s not his first big fall either. In 2010, Ortiz, 24, went down Big Banana Waterfall in his home country, which was a drop of mere 130 feet. But, Ortiz wanted a chance to break the record set when American Tyler Brandt went down Palouse three years ago.

Unfortunately, Ortiz will have to try again if he wants to break the record. The impact of landing in the water knocked him out of his kayak, therefore, he doesn’t get the record.

There is video of the plunge out there, and we’re trying to track it down. But, the photos from the Red Bull site are pretty shocking. –Brian McClintock
