Live at ICAST 2012: Coach Bobby Knight Kicks Off ICAST

There were no throwing of chairs, but Coach Bobby Knight did take his time to poke fun at the referees that have plagued him his entire career as he opened the 2012 ICAST at the Fishing Industry Breakfast on Wednesday, July 11.

Knight did not only talk basketball, though. Sharing stories of trekking into the Boundary Waters with Jerry McKinnis, now part-owner of B.A.S.S., for a terrible experience that lead to long fishing friendship. He also talked about getting personalized sports reports from Curt Gowdy, who would read the newspaper to him while they were driving to their fishing spot.

But it was his love of basketball and fishing that got the audience laughing.

“I’ll take fishing over basketball any day,” said Knight. “I have never once been bothered by referees or sports writers while fishing.”

That didn’t stop the legendary coach from talking basketball though, calling Michael Jordan the best player to play a team sport ever, regardless of the sport, and Bill Russell is the most valuable player to ever play a team sport.

It wasn’t all fun, games, and basketball, though. As ASA President and CEO Mike Nusman and Chairman of Board Jeff Marble both urged all in the audience to support Keep America Fishing, which has grown significantly in two years to be a powerful force in Washington, D.C. on fishing policy issues.

Now that this is done, it’s on to the cool products! -Brian McClintock
