Marc Jensen decided to go fishing with his wife and some friends off New Brighton Pier, New Zealand, so he grabbed his grandfather’s 30-year-old rod that was held together with insulation tape and a cable tie and hit the water.
With the rest of the fishing party having some moderate success, Jensen’s day was pretty quiet until his rod bent down and spinning reel went screaming. And then, “all hell broke loose,” according to Jensen.
”The four of us, unseasoned, far from skilful and rather clumsy on my part, all saw the dark outline of what looked like the spawn of Moby Dick,” he said, according to Stuff.Co.NZ. But, it wasn’t the rod that gave away, it was the line. The shark darted under the pier and a piece of concrete snapped the line off.
But, Jensen didn’t lose the fish. His friends went down to the beach and saw the shark there, evidently too warn out from the fight to carry on. The shark was nearly 8 feet long and weighed 88 pounds. -Brian McClintock
