Does a 145-Million-Year-Old Oyster Have World’s Biggest Pearl Inside? We May Never Know

It’s like a briefcase full of cash that no one is opening.

An oyster discovered near Portsmouth, England, that measured seven inches in diameter is believed to contain one of the largest pearls ever found. The gem could be the size of a golf ball and worth thousands of dollars.

A fisherman dragged the monstrous fossil up in a net. There’s one hang-up though: it’s debatable whether the rare fossil, unopened, is worth more or less than its precious contents. An MRI of the oyster revealed that there was indeed something that resembled a pearl inside, according to the Daily Mail.

For now, the case remains “closed,” literally. – Rick Bach
