Weekend fishing, 11/06 – 11/07/10

I started Saturday morning fishing for a couple hours in the Upper Fly Fishing Zone of the Salmon River.  It started a bit slow but after about 30 minutes the action picked up.  I got into and quickly lost a big brown trout.  The big browns have been my nemesis so far this season.  After that I landed a big male coho, a brown trout and a small chrome steelhead.  All in all, it was a pretty good morning.

I decided to head out around 11:00am and fish Grindstone Creek for a little while in the afternoon.  I was able to land a nice steelhead, just starting to get the winter colors.  It wasn't a big fish, but it was a great looking fish.  There were an encouraging amount of steelhead around as well as some zombie kings still in the mix.

I was able to talk myself into staying overnight at my parent's house in Pulaski to squeeze in a couple hours on the River Sunday morning before heading back out of town for work.  It was a beautiful frosty morning on the SR.  I fished mid-River and was alone except for a few other guys.  I landed a great steelhead on the spey rod.  It is amazing how those fish can rocket right out of the water!  No photos though unfortunately.  No sooner did I get the hook out, he bolted back into the current.  I gotta find more fishing buddies to capture more of these fish on camera!

About Ken Hubbard

I grew up in Pulaski, NY fishing the Salmon River and Grindstone Creek primarily. Stream and river fishing is where it is at for me. Hiking through the woods to get to that perfect spot and hearing the water rush by while waiting for the big guy to take the fly has a calming influence that I haven't experienced anywhere else. While I certainly enjoy casting to bass and trolling for walleye, salmon and trout, I would put on the waders, grab the fly rod and head for the river any day given the choice. Now that I have lived in the Syracuse area for the past 6 years, I have expanded my territory to local trout streams like Chittenango Creek and Nine Mile Creek. I still regularly fish my home waters and have also fished in Wyoming, Montana, Utah and of the coast off southern California. The list of fishing destinations I would like to (and more often than not, believe that I need to) visit include Argentina, New Zealand, British Columbia and Alaska to name a few!
