Pass It On – Outdoor Mentors took a bus-load of kids to the OK Kids Day event at Cheney State Park this last Saturday (4/23). The Cheney Lake Association put on a great event with games, snow cones, hot dogs, a raptor presentation by Ken Lockwood of the Raptor Center, fishing, and an Easter Egg Hunt!
For some of the kids, the ride from Wichita to Cheney State Park was full of firsts…like seeing their 1st cow! Now you'd think that coming from the middle of Kansas, spending time outdoors wouldn't be that rare of a thing, but "nature-deficit" disorder is everywhere!
When we got to the Lake, all of the kids had to have a snow cone first thing, despite the chilly weather.
Then Ken Lockwood from the Raptor Center did a presentation, showing the kids some of the owls and hawks they are currently rehabbing. The kids got see the owl wolf down a mouse as Ken talked about how they make their living on the plains.
Then it was time to go fishing! Unfortunately, the fish just weren't hungry for the worms we were serving up that morning. But that didn't deter these young fisher boys/girls. They all had a great time and were wanting to fish some more.
Pass It On – Outdoor Mentors wishes to express our gratitude to the Cheney Lake Association and all of their volunteers who made the day a great time in the great outdoors for a lot of kids!
We would also like to thank Office Sharp, who rounded up several volunteers from the Wichita Police Department to spend the morning with kids from the Big Brothers Big Sisters program.
