This was truly a phenomenal trip that none of us will ever forget. We boated well over 100 fish in two days of fishing. Talk about setting the bar high!!! Every pass led to an instant hookup once the Hairball hit the strike zone. Eric made us feel at home the moment we stepped on his new Conch 27. We've fished together alot over the years. He's one heck of a captain and a great friend. We've got to get Papa Roche, the BK Spoiler, and Uncle Fontaine out on the BHM for a reunion this this season!

The week before my first trip out with Eric. My neighbor's friends went out with a different charter and spent half a day fishing without making one catch.... On our trip out we had our limit by 7AM, including a nice 45" striper. We spent the rest of the day moving from place to place catching 5-6 fish at a time with out fail. Everytime out with Eric has been the same. We have just scheduled our 5th trip out and first time for Tuna and I am more than confident we will be returning with fish... It has been a great experience with lots of laughs and much fun. I would suggest to anyone wanting to plan a charter to call on Eric you will not be disappointed!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The season is winding down.

For some simple maintenance on StrikeLite, change the oil yearly, with the unit in the upright position as if you were drilling a hole, only add enough oil to the bottom of the dip stick. See video on www.strikemaster.com

We suggest you leave fresh, stabilized in the fuel tank and run 5-10 minutes at least once a month in the off- season. If you keep fresh fuel moving through the system periodically, all components will remain soft and function properly for next winter.

If you have a routine that works, feel free to continue that process. Unfortunately there is no perfect answer but here are a few tips we have picked up over 50 years.

If you can always store up-right or vertical
Make sure you have a blade cover.
If you store your auger without fuel. Always add fresh stabilized fuel before attempting to start.
Grease shaft to protect from corrosion

I admit this post is a bit long, but waterways being shut down by the government is a very intriguing topic. A little confusing as well, but the facts will certainly be ironed out over time. In the meantime, the debate remains heated.

The Obama administration announced that the public input period for a federal fishery strategy has ended, exciting scores of fishermen and inciting a rally at the Capital. The decision of regulating our nation's ocean, coastal, Great Lakes and inland waters is being left in the hands of the Interagency Ocean Policy Task Force. Sounds official, I know. That's why I'm a little nervous too, especially after reading Robert Montgomery's piece for ESPN. Among the excitement, though, I found another opinion that could settle our nerves.

Jeffrey Weeks, a newspaper columnist for the Charlotte Examiner, responds to the ESPN article, calling it the "worst example of outdoor sports reporting in the history of America." Weeks argues for the Interagency Ocean Policy Task Force, insisting that it was created to protect natural resources and outdoor sporting traditions like fishing. That’s a good thing. If that’s really the agency’s goal.

Montgomery paints the Obama administration and the agency as the enemy, out to control our waters and nullify recreational fishing. He argues that the Obama administration, with environmental groups like the NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), could shut down waterways fished recreationally.

So who’s right? Well, I don’t know, but the two opinions can help people understand the agency’s possible intentions. Weeks considers the situation a feud between environmental groups and commercial fishing groups, with recreational fishermen landing on the side of the environmentalists. He blames the commercial groups for decades of irresponsible fishing techniques. Now “they are clinging to an amazingly brazen life line: they have decided to scare recreational fishermen in an effort to get recs to fight the environmentalists with them.” In essence, the commercials are using the recs as a ****** to eliminate further regulations.

The question remains whether or not recreational fishermen should be scared? Even if the agency’s goal for “marine special planning” creates commercial regulations, how will it affect recreational anglers? Part of the problem for recs is that we might already lumped into the mass term of fishermen with the commercials. Maybe that's what Montgomery is arguing for. When that happens, all fishermen get the regulations for the decades of poor environmental stewardship on the commercials’ regard.

Certainly it's a heated issue, with regulations and suggestions for "marine spacial planning" that scare the average recreational fisherman. As political policies go, there is often small print that goes unnoticed until it gets passed. When the public input period ends, then the real agenda surfaces and the small print gets unveiled.

After Sport Fishing with Great clients like the Roche Family and many more. I realize this is what keeps me in the Charter Fishing business today. Brandon fished for many years with me and now owns his own boat. He sent these picture of there family fishing trip they took a couple of seasons ago on my fishing boat in Falmouth Harbor. We know stay in touch all season long letting each other now when the bite is on in the different area's in Massachusetts. On occasion Brandon mates for me and I really enjoy his company.

Not illegal to remove from the water here in Lee County. FL state allows you to purchase a $50 tarpon tag if you decide you want to take them home with you. Most people who do fish for tarpon will take a picture of it in the water and maybe take a scale for the memory. Very strict rules on the tackle and techniques of catching them in Boca Grande Pass, at the north end of the county. This one seems thin for the length, nice fish though! Biggest I have seen in this area was about 8 feet long...

Our favorite review over the past week, though, was for the Bomber A-Salt by Dustin Schell. His passionate review of the Bomber's effectiveness in the salt and even on pike and bass made it thoughtful, thorough, and useful.

Here is Dustin's review:

The Bomber A-Salt series is easily my favorite saltwater hard lure. Not only are they very durable; holding up to hours upon hours of pounding against rock jetties, but they also produce fish more consistently than any other hard swimmer on the market, in my experience. The A-Salt model has a body shape and vast selection of colors and patterns to realistically imitate a wide variety of bait-fish, from mullet to herring, shad, anchovies and even menhaden. In the water, the A-Salt moves with incredible realism. It looks so natural, I've had Terns dive at it before, while retrieving it near the surface. The black and purple bomber is my "go-to" for night time Striper fishing. I have also seen it produce bluefish, drum, and even large pickerel and bass in freshwater! The large 1/0 saltwater grade treble hooks stand up to the largest striper without even flinching, and the tough body easily deflects puncture from the toothiest bluefish. As far as castability goes? Better grab some binoculars. The way that this lure is shaped, along with the even weight distribution provided by the hefty hooks, split rings and solid body-construction; it may as well be a bullet. It's rather easy to see why this lure is my number one choice for a wide variety of fish species. I never fish without one close at hand.

There has been an Internet firestorm over an ESPN.com story about a potential ban of certain recreational fisheries. GoFISHn got caught up in it, as did the Christian Science Monitor, MoldyChum, Field&Stream, Skate the Fly, and others.

We contacted Eric Schwaab, the newly appointed Assistant Administrator for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association's Fisheries Service for some help clarifying the issue. Schwaab is a long-time champion of recreational fisheries, holding positions within the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and Department of Fisheries, and his appointment was lauded by the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership. We'll be interviewing Mr. Schwaab soon, but he sent along a statement.

Here is Mr. Schwaab's statement:

The Ocean Policy Task Force has not recommended a ban on recreational fishing.

The draft reports by the Ocean Policy Task Force do not contain a zoning map and do not establish any restrictions on recreational fishing, nor make any judgments about whether one ocean activity or use is better than another. Instead, the reports set up a policy and framework for effectively managing the many sustainable uses of the ocean while upholding our responsibility to be stewards of our oceans, coasts and Great Lakes.

As a member of the task force, NOAA Administrator Dr. Jane Lubchenco, has said, and I echo her on this, that saltwater recreational fishing is vital to this nation and NOAA is committed to building a strong partnership with America’s saltwater anglers to ensure that Americans have opportunities to fish sustainably for generations to come.

Saltwater recreational fishing matters to me on a personal level as a recreational fisherman, it matters to millions of Americans who enjoy this great sport and it matters to our economy. Our most recent economic report shows it supports a half million jobs and generates $82 billion in sales each year.

NOAA is committed to adopting policies that will ensure that current and future generations have the opportunity to enjoy the great tradition of recreational fishing.

If Montgomery's piece for ESPN Outdoors yesterday (click here to read our post) left you a bit confused as to what's going on in Washington over potential new regulatory restraints on recreational fishing, you aren't alone.

This piece in the Christian Science Monitor sheds more light on what's happening. It seems that the heart of the matter is the administration's Interagency Ocean Policy Task Force ( a 35-page pdf that spells out the task force's agenda -- and more here) which launched last June, and an idea borrowed from the UN called "marine spatial planning," which sounds, well, complicated:

"Marine spatial planning (MSP), according to the United Nations, is “a public process of analyzing and allocating the spatial and temporal distribution of human activities in marine areas to achieve ecological, economic, and social objectives that usually have been specified through a political process.""

That sort of language is scary because it's not all that clear. But reading between the lines, it's clear that the taskforce is going to decide whose interests come out on top, and there are a lot of interests in play and lots of competing data. No wonder recreational anglers are worried.

Installing the new dash board on the Falmouth Offshore fishing boat is a tedious venture. Making something perfect in an non perfect environment is no easy task. Scribing and lots of grinding and sanding is enough to dive you nuts. The one thing we made no mistake on is the size this monster, Measuring 48 inches long and 23 inches tall will make plenty of room for the state of art fishing electronics.

I run a guide service that specializes in Fly Fishing for virtually anything&I took my son & two clients over to a small stream in Wisconsin & had quite a day between the four of us we landed well over 100 of these beautiful Rainbows & lost many more.

I broke off a solid 15 pounder & one around 10 - 12 pounds back to back.

Spring season isn’t here just yet, but it’s on the verge. Water temperatures are on the rise with this week’s warming trend and other signs, like dogwoods and azaleas about to bloom, are lining up as well. The shallowest water with dark bottom will be the quickest to warm to the desirable mid-60 degree levels, and anglers tossing noisy topwater plugs like Chug Bugs, Skitterwalks, Zara Spooks and Hall ‘Em In Rat Dogs will score big trout looking to gorge after a lean winter. Suspending plugs such as Redfins, Catch 2000 and DOA BaitBusters will also fool early season trout, along with DOA shrimp suspended under a clacking cork combo. Use Aqua Dream spoons or spinner baits to probe for redfish along the shoreline and grass points. No word yet on whether the Spanish mackerel and pompano have arrived, but it’s only a matter of days now, not weeks. I'm way past ready!

Red snapper has become the posterfish for marine fisheries management.

In 2009, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association placed a ban on recreational fishing for red snapper on the Atlantic coast from North Carolina through Florida. The outcry from anglers and sportsmen-conservation groups since then has led to public comments, coalition letters, and even a fishermen's march on the capital. But the threat of closing more fisheries to recreational anglers is looming ever closer.

Yesterday, ESPN reported that President Obama’s administration has closed the public commenting period on a federal policy that will govern how inland and coastal waters are zoned. Depending on the policy, this could lead to fishing bans like the red snapper ban in saltwater fisheries, the Great Lakes, and inland waters.

At the end of February, the American Sportfishing Association (ASA), The Billfish Foundation (TBF), the Center for Coastal Conservation (CCC), the Coastal Conservation Association (CCA), the International Game Fish Association (IGFA), and the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) sent a letter to NOAA imploring the agency to take action in addressing this fisheries management boondoggle.

In a release, ASA President and CEO Michael Nussman called for the need of proper conservation, but with better management. "We support healthy fisheries and good fishery management. It's good for anglers, our business and our economy. We’ve developed common-sense administrative and appropriations proposals that address the need for timely, accurate data while preserving efforts to rebuild our marine fisheries. We see these as a starting point for actions that must be implemented to address the short and long term problems,” said Nussman.

“Unfortunately, what we are seeing now is crisis management rather than fisheries management and this must stop before more jobs are lost and more of the nation’s recreational anglers are unnecessarily shut out.”

Some leaders in the fishing industry are worried, though, that the sportsmen voice is going to be ignored.

"When the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) completed their successful campaign to convince the Ontario government to end one of the best scientifically managed big game hunts in North America (spring bear), the results of their agenda had severe economic impacts on small family businesses and the tourism economy of communities across northern and central Ontario," said Phil Morlock, director of environmental affairs for Shimano.

"Now we see NOAA and the administration planning the future of recreational fishing access in America based on a similar agenda of these same groups and other Big Green anti-use organizations, through an Executive Order by the President. The current U.S. direction with fishing is a direct parallel to what happened in Canada with hunting: The negative economic impacts on hard working American families and small businesses are being ignored.”

Anglers throughout the U.S. will wait on baited hook to see how President Obama’s Interagency Ocean Policy Task Force’s report changes fisheries management. Until then, enjoy your favorite fishery now, before it joins the red snapper on the do-not-fish list.

The weather has been amazing in Pulaski with temps over 40 degrees everyday for the past week. A lot of the snow is melting already and the steelhead are starting to spawn. The Salmon River water level just went up to 750cfs last night which should help bring in a fresh run of Steelies. I went driving around today checking out some spots with my girlfriend and brought a rod along. Here are a few nice rainbows she caught today.

hellow everyone, i would have to say my favorite lure is the Rapala Jointed 9 (Perch) i have caught and landed numerous bass and northern pike using this lure when nothing else was working, with a nice sudden jerk of the rod tip will twitch the bait and the fish under the bait will be sent into a frenzy, i use this lure for multple species and it works!

Wonderful all around lure. I used it the other day in 55 degree water and landed 5 Largemouth Bass. I would recommend it to anyone.

In the immortal words of coach John Wooden, "Be quick, but don't hurry." When you are standing on the bow of a flats boat, time stands still as you and your guide search for a passing bonefish. They appear out of nowhere, and you have to cast quick, but you have to cast well (that's the "don't hurry" part).

Keep your fly in your hand with a big loop of line off the tip of your rod, and leave your excess line loose on the deck. You can get away with a false cast or two to get your line out and pointed the right way, but you're going to spook the bone if you yank the line in and out of the water. I should know.

When You Push Down, They Gone

In the exasperated words of Charlie Sweeting, Andros South guide, "When you push down, then they gone."

Go barefoot on the deck when you're fishing, and don't plan to move your feet, shift your weight, belch or do anything that will alter the boat's displacement by so much as an ounce - or "they gone." If you think that's tough, think about the guide poling from his platform - they're practically motionless.

Strip Set.

If you want to catch that bone following your fly, then "strip set."

Just do it in a way that the bone doesn't notice. Sorta tug the line, or pretend to. You know, fake out the bone so he bites down hard on your fly that he's twirling in his maw. Oh oh, you tugged too hard. Oh oh, you didn't tug hard enough.

Strip setting remains a mystery to me, though I did catch three bones, each solidly hooked. I'm sure the magic of the strip set will become more clear to me on my next trip to South Andros, which can't come soon enough

I do best in the spring temp 57-65 but you can catch them anytime useing different techniques spring and fall are better though

I have caught mine on olive and white clousers, aout a size 12 tied kinda sparse... I use bead chain eyes and let them get DEEP and usually nab a few...

I like an brown and orange crawdad pattern or small EP shad like flies but then again the old standby Wooly Bugger, olive, brown or brown body olive tail, usually does it for us here in the South ;-)

When I was in Iraq we used to use a small, liek a size 10 olive wooly bugger, hardly had hook ups because they would usually suck up the fly and spit it out before we could set the hook but small bushy olive flies worked there...

There are more and more guides that are learning how to help people with limitations fly fish. I would hit their websites or check your local fly shop and se if they know anyone local. I am not sure of your extent but try contacting your local chapter of Project Healing Waters. They are a group that takes injured war vets fly fishing but if you don't fit that catergory I am sure they will still be able to give you good info on guides that are equipped to help ya out. I struggled for a few YEARS trying to get my cast down right. I have a few buddies form my local shop that taught me some great tips and now I can throw those long casts wiht no problem. The best thing is practice. Get a lesson or two and keep practicing. If I am not cathcing fish or seeing anything I still cast for practice. Having someone show you the basicis and the time spent in the yard laying out line will help when you are after fish. Also make sure you get a good fly line. A good line will shoot through the guides and make it easier to cast and be less frustrating for you. I taught several guys to fly fish while I was deployed to Iraq and after I took away the crappy line they had they picked it up much easier. It will cost ya a few bucks but it well worth it in the long run. The TFO rod you have is a great rod to learn on. TFO makes good stuff and for beginners it is the best of both worlds, inexpensive but a good quality rod. Easy to load and cast. I have not fished for bones YET, but I will be using flouro... Not only is it less visable and gives you that advantage but it is more abrasion resistant.. not that bones have big teeth but I like it for Redfish. Keeps your fly attached to your line ;-) I would say not necessary but it will help...

The last couple of days have been interesting, to say the least. Weather forecasters have been enthusiastically incorrect, with temps cold, clouds prevalent and winds breezy. On their behalf, there have been a few minutes of 60 deg temps, bright clear skies and light winds, but its still early march of the coldest s.c. winter in recent history. Conditions have made the fishing tough, not impossible, but sightfishing has been a difficult endeavor. Yesterday afternoon anglers were on schooled reds for 4 hrs, with only 3 to boat, not the greatest, but ok. The reds were only intersted in stinky gulps, and then only slightly interested, with many more fish spooking from the neutral colored, highly scented artificials, than eating. Had a busmans holiday with friends Hunter and Andrew, both ninja caliber fisherman. We had plans of scouting new areas in search of adult reds. We found none. We did find some topnotch areas for tarpon later in season. Caught 16-17 reds up to @8lbs in areas where fish have been caught in the past, none were otf, but with no sun, high tide in middle of day, and cold, variable, and often gusty winds, there werent many options… Waiting for warmth and stable winds and clounds.. oh yeah, most fish were caught during bright windless periods. go figure.

I would like to get out at least 2 or 3 times over the winter but things didn't work out that way this year. This was my first trip out for cod, pollock, haddock and ling. This pollock definitely made my trip because it was the only keeper I caught all day and my first fish on after about 4 hours. The best winter trip we took out of New Jersey was for large sea bass, ling and porgy but since sea bass are illegal to catch now the trip was cancelled for winter 2010.

Because of my lack of significant field experience i may not be the most qualified to answer...lol. Couple of things i have learned however. Because the tip is very soft it really protects the tippet. You can land and return the fish quickly. This is another aspect of tenkara i like. not exhasting the fish. The landing techniques in similar to a conventional fly rod. lift and push away from the fish. Catch the leader or use a net. Hopefully i will have pix soon to demonstrate...lo

Couple of late June Monomoy Bass all caught on light tackle. As squid pass through the rips of Momonoy in late June/early July fishing can be incredible. Bass are there gorging themselves on squid as they exit Nantucket sound.

My favorite lure is the Johnson Silver Minnow Gold Spoon. Like most spoons casting inot the wind is tough, but that is to be expected. I hook it onto a snap swivel to prevent line twist. The reds absolutely love this thing. It lasts well also. I can probably catch 60+ reds on one spoon without sharpening the hook. The only reason I replace it is due to the gold wearing off from dragging on the sand. It is also a weedless spoon which is great when retrieveing through a grass bed. Try one while sight casting to a school of reds, You won't be disappointed.
