One of my off season projects, a power assisted surf fishing cart. This is the prototype as I also have a larger cart that will carry more gear that I will also be power assisting. Turns out the drive train from a Rascal mobility scooter fits up under it perfect!! A little fabrication for reinforcement and mounting points and viola, a solid mount. I would like a better tire and wheel combo, but for now this should work ok. The little mag wheels add a touch of hot rod lol. I still need to figure out the electronics for control. There are a few options here but I would like to find the factory electronics from a Rascal scooter to make the installation plug and play. Anyone know of a junked Rascal scooter that I can rob the controller off of? lol

We fish out of an angler's paradise, The Casa Vieja Lodge in Guatemala on board, The Canaso with Capt. Chico. This was the first and biggest of the 37 sailfish that were LANDED in 3 days of fishing. We raised 72 sailfish and hooked up 55 sailfish. This was the BEST fishing trip ever. What makes this trip even better is that it was a father fishing with his son!

This Mako Shark was caught off of North Carolina while drift fishing with cut bait. Not only does the shark fight like a sob, it can skyrocket 5-10 feet in the air. Its meat is white and very good to eat. Because of its beautiful coloring and its size my client had a fish mount replica made of this world class sportfish.
The Mako ranges from the North Alantic all the way to the waters of the Florida Keys. It feeds primarily off Amberjacks but of corse, all baits are prey to this beast.

The main Salmon River has been tough at times since the Steelhead are more focused on spawing than eating eggs and flies. I went out to the Coralville Reservoir and Lake Macbride this afternoon to try my luck. The dam was extremely busy but the fishing was dead for everyone no matter what bait or technique was used. I almost snagged a big carp, but I wouldn't have really wanted that anyway.
After fishing that area for about an hour and a half, I moved to Angler's Point at Macbride and messed around with several methods before tying a white spinnerbait to my line and casting near fallen trees. It took a while, but a slow, steady retrieve and perseverance paid off when this big guy surprised me.
The water was still really cold and even this white bass was awfully lethargic. If you're planning a trip to Macbride, you might want to wait a while to let things heat up before you go out or you can get out there and work on your patience if nothing else. If you decide to give it a shot, keep it slow and simple for now until the water warms.

"Season in review"

Black ice is rearing its ugly head to ice fisherman as the ides of March creep into our lives. If this wasn't one of your best years on the ice, you just didn't get out enough. Try and change that for next year! The early December cold front secured a memorable year for fisherman, resorts and the ice fishing industry. Our "Braggin Board" was evidence of the enjoyable experiences of this season. We will be expanding the "Braggin Board "for next year with some new destinations for you to enjoy and look forward to your participation.

As the season comes to its end I've heard and seen some disturbing behavior by some ice fisherman when they leave the lakes and ponds they've enjoyed this winter. We all need to strive to take better care of our resources and leaving the remains to wash up on a lake owners shore is not what we want as sportsmen. Please help "pick up" as you leave the ice and maybe your neighbors. This sets an example for those kids that are coming along behind us and will help us grow the sport to others.

Thank you for your patience as we introduced the StrikeMaster SOLO power head. As with any new product launch, we had some issues that I feel we handled professionally and quickly to get you on the ice with little delay. Our customer service team did an outstanding job all season and we hope you feel the same. Once we overcome this small hurdle, the feedback on the new SOLO was tremendous and is something for StrikeMaster to build on for years to come.

Speaking of kids, we have been partially responsible for putting over 3,000 kids on the ice this season. Either through the Minn-Aqua program, independent programs, NAFIC and various local sponsorships through sportsman's clubs. A "thank you" goes out to all the volunteers and organizers that made these events possible for the future of our sport.

Drain the gas and make room in the garage for your auger and bucket. Before you know it the 4th of July will be here and the itch to get back on the hard water will be creeping up like a jumbo perch going for your bait. Then, all of a sudden the excitement begins all over again.

May 1st has ALWAYS brought me a nice catch. Must be when they finally make it up our shores from FLA. I was off that day and was glad to be able to hit the beach. Tossed out a whole rigged whiting, 15minutes later had a huge run, but got dropped. It bit the Whiting in two. Rigged the head back up and reset it. Another big run, again dropped. I texted my fishing buds, to tell them "they're backkkkk" They dropped everything to join me at the beach. Meanwhile I had another whole Whiting rigged waiting for another opportunity. My back up arrived and we quickly got them set up. I waded out to cast my friends wife's rig, (we sometimes need to wade out to hit deeper waters). I left her instructions on how to set the main drag on my rig in the event it went off while I was setting her rig. What are the chances right?? Well as I cast her rig out, I hear a huge splash next to me, ok, that spooked me a bit, looked up at the beach to see her screaming at me lol. She remembered what I told her, flipped the main drag on and held on till I could get to it. Good girl!! Several runs and jumps and damn near spooled later, it was like trying to reel in a sunken log!! She did not wanna come in. But eventually my gear held up long enough to get her close and get a rope on her tail! What a fight and quite the adrenaline rush!! Snapped pics and quickly got her back into the water. She was a fat one with pups I'm sure. We release all of our sharks and have only lost one to date.

The reactions from the tourist and beach goers is always entertaining lol. It's always, "You caught that right out there?" :) Amazing how people aren't aware of whats out in the ocean. I guess they think they are only deep water predators. Guess again my friends!! It's the ocean, not a swimming pool.

I can only guess at what she weighed as there really isn't a good way to do that without potentially hurting them. So I'm guessing a little on the conservative side, which of course is contradictory to a good fishing story lol

Anyways, thats the best to date. Lots of close ones to that, some big runs that got off that could have been bigger, but when your only using 25lb test mono, it's always gonna be win some lose some with these big fish. Cant wait to get back out there!!

This was a while ago when I lived in Albany, NY, about 1987. I was on crutches and a friend wanted to cheer me up so took me fishing at Lock 9. I could not stand on my own, so was sitting by the side of the Lock. I had cast out a good many times and not even a nibble. I wanted to go. I was encouraged to try once more, so I did.

The location was about 20 feet above the water level and we were quite near the falls so it was deep. As my line hit the water, it just kept going...and going. I waited a little then tried setting the hook. Suddenly, it felt like I had hooked a whale, but mostly dead weight. I had real light [8 lb test] line on and was concerned that it would snap.

My friend asked if I thought I had gotten caught on the bottom. At that moment, the line started stripping off the reel. I said, Not unless the bottom is moving! I battled for well over 30 minutes. Soon a small group gathered to observe the action.

KNowing I had such light line, I also knew even if I didnt lose the fish, I could bnever lift it out of the water without the line snapping. One of the observers had a drop net and offered to bring it in for me. They had to verbally guide me to the net since I could not see to the water. When we got the fish up on shore, I was stunned. It was the biggest fish I had ever caught and it really went a long way to cheer me.

Tog are easily one of, if not my most, favorite fish to target. They combine some of the most desirable traits in a gamefish. Tautog fight extremely well, take quite a bit of patience and skill to hook, are abundant (at least in the Delaware Bay), and are one of the best eating fish around, with thick, mild, white fillets. So, it's not much of a suprise that my personal best is going to be focused on these awesome fish.

It was Tuesday, November 11th, and I was off work for the day. My friends Paul and Nathan met me at the Lewes boat ramp on this cool November morning. We loaded up Paul's 18' Boston Whaler and started out to the Outer Wall; a long stretch of rock wall built to make a harbour in the inner part of the Delaware Bay. When we made it to the Wall, we began the process of "Toggling up". This is where you anchor off of the bow, and back your boat (CAREFULLY!) up to the wall. When you get to the distance off of the wall to where you want to be fishing, you throw a weight, usually an old piece of heavy junk (window sash weights, iron piping, or something homemade), into the rocks. The object being, to get the weight jammed securely in a crevace of the rocks, and having your anchor stuck in the bottom out away from the wall. This way, you are able to stay exactly in the same spot, without the threat of crashing into the rocks. However, as we started this process, we accidentally started anchoring too far away from the wall, and, due to my lack of attention, and a rusty shackle connecting the end of anchor line to the boat, we lost it; anchor, rope, shackle, and all, right in the drink. Great. So, after jigging around the area with a large, weighted treble hook for awhile, we recovered the anchor, and re-anchored.

We started fishing, and as usual, it was slow as first. After about a half an hour though, the tell-tale tog bite! *Tap*... *Tap, tap tap tap!* *BAM!* Fish on! It was a decent 4 or 5lb tog! After that, it was non-stop for the rest of the morning. Tog, after tog, after tog. None of 'em under 16"! Later on in the day, it began to slow down again. That is, until, Paul got a monster bite. Now, you know that a tog is big when there isn't the characteristic *Tap,tap* small bites. A big tog inhales your bait in one bite. So, all of the sudden, Paul is hooked up and his 6'3" St. Croix Premier Xtra-Heavy Musky Rod is bent in two! After a rather long fight (2-3 minutes) a MONSTER tog is at the surface and the three of us utter the same response, simultaneously: "Whoah..." After a quick panic looking for the net, the hog of a tog (lol) was in the boat! We fished the rest of the day away, and called the trip at about 3:00 pm.

When we got back to the dock, we re-counted our catch, and when we got back to Bill's (Www.Billssportshop.com) the big tog weighed 8.50lbs on the scale. A citation! The second biggest one (my personal best) weighed in at an even 7 lbs. All in all, we kept 21 tog that day (none under 4.5 lbs), caught 40 or 50, and missed countless more! Now, I know that even an 8.5 lb tog isn't THAT big (the world record being in the low 20lb range), but, this post is about "personal bests" not "world records" =p

This Tarpon was a catch and release trophy caught at Boca Grande, on the west coast of Florida.This area is known for its tarpon run that attracts sportfishermen from all over the country. Most tarpon are released mainly because there is no food value.
The angler had this fish mount replica made by Browns Taxidermy after being refered by a charter captain familiar with the Florida Taxidermist. Boca Grande is on the Gulf of Mexico south of Tampa, Florida. The area is also known for other sportfish such as Sea Trout, Snook, Flounder.

It is nearly April and the bluefin should start to show up in May. The tuna will be chasing bait on the surface and therefore we will be able to target them using topwater plugs. These charters couldn't be more exciting. Sighting casting for 200+ pound tuna is something every angler should experience. The fish this spring should range in size from 65"-75" and that large of a bluefin is quite the battle on spinning tackle. You wont be disappointed by one of these trips.

The ice fishing may be coming to a close in the US, the season, but it's still booming in South Korea. As in hundreds of thousands of fishermen scattered atop one river in Hwacheon, South Korea each day. If you thought they go crazy for ice fishing in Minnesota, check out how they hit the ice in South Korea.
In what looks like a Walt Disney World attraction, or even a page from a "Where's Waldo" book, more than a million people participated in the annual three-week Hwacheon Ice Festival. They come here each year to dip into the 9,000 ready-drilled holes or lay down and drill one themselves. Nearly everyone pulls in a prize because the organizers of the festival stock the river with 32 tons of fresh trout each day.
With training like this, it makes us wonder how the South Koreans didn't win ice fishing gold this past week in Rhinelander, Wisc.

This 40" redfish was caught off Saint Augustine, Florida by angular Brady Holmes of Pittsburg, Pa. He was fishing off of a party boat in the Atlantic Ocean using cutt bait on the bottom. The Red Drum had an exceptional amount of spots on it, prompting Brady to have a catch and release fish mount replica made by Browns Taxidermy located in Cape Canaveral, Florida.
Brady will be going to train to be a Navy Seal this month so we put him in front of the line so he could get his Redfish fiberglass replica before he left to serve is country.

This 40" Redfish was caught off of St. Augustine, Florida in the Atlantic Ocean. It was caught by Brady Holmes of Pittsburg, Pa. If that darn lion would ever quit roaring, the trout bite is going off on the East Flats, from the St. Marks River east to the Econfina River. A rising tide is the most productive phase and good-sized trout are aggressively striking lures in depths ranging from just over three to five feet. Suspending twitch baits like Redfins and Catch 2000 plugs are working well, especially around rock grass and over broken bottom. The usual gambit of noisy topwater plugs are effective, too, along with soft-plastic jerk baits such as the DOA CALs, Exude Flukes or Bass Assassins. No particular color is dominant, although glow is always a good choice, along with root beer or new penny. Redfish are prowling the shorelines, where they’ll respond to Aqua Dream spoons, topwater plugs and jerk baits. Nearshore water temperatures are in the mid-60s and will continue to rise with the warm weather.

I have to use "Rainbow Trout" very loosely as a species here. This is the gnarliest rainbow trout I have ever seen, and as Field&Stream's Joe Cermele says, "it's all thanks to science."

In order to make more muscle on a trout, researchers at the University of Rhode Island have basically turned a trout into an extra for Pumping Iron. I can understand that a more muscular fish means more tasty flesh, but I have to agree with Cermele that if I caught this sucker, I'd assume it was from Lake Springfield on The Simpsons and call the authorities.

No, these are not triploids, which are genetically mutated to simply grow bigger. These trout are the pet project of Professor Terry Bradley of the Univeristy of Rhode Island. The "ripped" effect comes from experimenting with myostatin protein levels in the fish, which is the same protein that causes Belgian Blue cattle to have increased muscle mass. At 2:30 last night after being up since 6:00 am, I was asking my self Does the name B H M boat stand for BIG HEADACHE MARINE . Don't get me wrong this is an amazing hull and will be a unbelievable Cape Cod Charter Boat. But fixing the quick lobster style work and all the 12 Year's of handy man work is no small task. I will post some of the progress at the and of today, I am on my way to the boat now. The boy's have been on it since 7:00 am. Tomorrow taking a break and heading the N. Y. steel head fishing with my good friend tony from Tony's Salmon Country Guild Service.

It was a Saturday morning and I had just got off work. The morning wasn't too great, being in October, there was a bit of cold in the air. My brother David and I had planned all week that we were going fishing someplace and on this morning, we wasn't going to let a bit of cold get in the way. Only trouble we had was where to go. That week had brought in alot of rain and the Salt River was just shy of flood stage. Since I had got a 17 pound blue cat earlier in the year at the very same spot with the water level being about the same, I was sure that was the place to be. Some reason though I couldn't convince David. He on the other hand was wanting to go to a local lake where the state had just stocked trout. After about a half hour of discussion, I finally told him that we'll give the river about an hour and if nothing happens, we will then try for trout elsewhere. He was fine with that even though he was sure we would get nothing.
I decided to take a standard catfish rod and another pole that I had some luck off of before. The pole that I used was very lucky right from the start. What it was, I had been in another drawing on facebook and the grand prize was a fishing reel. Seeing how the page was just getting started, I managed to win it fairly easily. I went to walmart and got a spool of 10 pound test line and 7 foot bass rod. Grant it, it was no where near great, but still with the luck I had before, I was sure that I could catch something off of it. Turns out on this day I got more lucky than I would have ever dreamed.
The primary bait of choice that day was chicken livers. I had some luck off of redworms and nightcrawlers before while fishing for catfish, but to me, in the end, there is nothing better than a fresh piece of bloody chicken livers. David and I managed to go to the river and the spot we already had in mind was free, so we were really excited about that. Looking back on it now, I think the spot really played a big part in being able to catch the fish that day. What the main secret was, since the water was high, there was areas of still water just off the current. I've went wading before for catfish and then I learned that where the still water and the current meet, the catfish always lay. Its a where they can rest, and also run in the current for a quick meal if they need to. Anyways, me and david went to largest opening we could find. I always believe that if you got of chance of getting anything, you might just as well go where theres a chance of more coming in.
I had my pole baited up and threw it out in the water. It had been out for a good 15 minutes and still nothing. Only thing I could think of is if I'm going to be right about the spot we chose, I better catch something even if it was 2 pounds. I went ahead and reeled my line in to give it a better cast. I was aiming to get as close to the current as possible and still have it land in the still water. Once again, luck had played a key role because it landed somehow just as I had hoped. I went ahead and layed my pole down and still didn't see much action. Only thing I could think is there is bound to be something out in this water to catch. Anything is always better than going home empty handed.
Suddenly I noticed a slight pull on my line. I thought there is no way the current could work up in here all of a sudden but still I was a bit gun shy to jerk on the first pull. I also thought to myself, "most time a catfish would just take a run, why not this time?" I gave it a few more minutes and decided to give it a pull. If I miss it, we'd still have no fish, so there was really nothing to lose. Once I pulled back it felt like I was hung up. Only thing about that was there were no hang ups in the area for me to be on. Finally the beast started to move. First thing I did was loosen my drag. I had had big ones on bigger rods before and since I didn't loosen the drag on those, they managed to snap the line. I don't know, I guess with a 10 pound test line, I knew that there is no way I could just pull most fish in. Instead I had to let it fight itself out.
The marathon was just starting. The fish would take alittle bit of line, but then I would try to hold him up him up to keep him from getting to the current. The only thought I really had at the time was, "If I let this fish get in that current, theres no way I'll be able to get him." I was just hoping to have the chance to see this fish and say I actually caught something. At the time, my parents had been out going to a few stores, so my dad called me up. Now that is truly the last thing you want is to have a good size fish on the line and have to try to fight it with only one hand. I took my phone out as quick as possible and handed to David so he could talk. At the time my dad was still about 10 miles away and still hadn't finished there shopping so only thing he told me was to fight it out and good luck. During the fight, people kept walking past. Each taking a few minutes to talk and then say "good luck" and go on. With this fish, I honestly needed all the luck I could get, especially with the pole I had.
During the fight, there would be a couple of times the water would start to churn showing the fish was possibly about ready to give up and except defeat, but for some reason, everytime it did, it found another burst of energy and make another run. Each time I seen him, it just gave me more and more of a drive to catch him, even though I still couldn't tell what it was. My heart that day must have been going 100 miles per hours with all the excitment of such a big fish on my line. Time went past and the fight went on. My dad called about every 15 minutes to see how I was doing. I think he was the most supprised that I was even able to hold to the fish for so long. He always told me not to take that pole to the river because you never know what you'll get. I was hoping not to prove him right on this day as well.
The fight was about 40 minutes in and people were still coming though asking about the fish. All I could do was smile and say, "I'm working on him." I could tell by then the fish was really starting to get tired. About that time I finally seen my chance to get him. Also, I heard a car pull in behind me at the time. For some reason I knew it was my dad. David was ready just as a good fishing buddy would be with dip net in hand. The fish finally came up and as David went for him, I said a prayer to not let it get off after fighting it for so long. Somehow my dream came true. We were using an aluminum dip net at the time and thats where I found out that they are good for smaller fish. We managed to drag the fish somehow up the bank a little way, I picked up the fish by the gills and took him stright up to show my dad. It was funny because I was saying, "Is that big enough?" After showing him to my dad, I looked around at the people for a bit. I looked to my right and seen the town mayor standing there. It was the best feeling I ever had. Even the mayor of the town was saying that is a good fish while all along, everyone else was taking pictures on there phones. It was great, for once in my life, I was the local celeberty. For some reason, it was a moment I just didn't want to end.
I had my dad go ahead and take a picture for me so I could send it to all my friends and start to brag of the fish I just caught. Only bad thing about that day was I forgot two important things, a scale and a stringer. About that time my brother hooked a fish. It wasn't too big, but still bigger than average. My dad told us he would go ahead and take the fish home for us in the bed of his truck, put them in water and call us back up with the weight. When I got that call hearing David's was 14 and mine was 46, no one in the world could have smiled bigger than me. Even though we didn't catch anything else that day, having 60 pounds of fish is something to always be happy about. David at the time started to get mad at me, I just told him, "good thing we went for catfish instead of trout, hum?" Anyways, after about 15 pictures once we got home, we decided the day was a huge success. Only one thing left was too tell all the family and put in the paper. For about the next two weeks I was a local celeberity and still today, I always talk of the one that didn't get away.

This was one of the best days of my life. It was the last fishing trip I took with my dad before he died. He was a cajun and loved to go catfishing. We went on a week long trip to a lake in Arizona. We fished from a flat bottom boat using waterdogs. We had been fishing for a couple of days and my dad was tired so he stayed on shore, a friend that had gone with us went with me out on the boat. I caught the fish and got him up to the boat and the other guy was at the other end of the boat and he was asking me what do I do now and I kept yelling at him to help me get the fish in the boat and I finally told him just grab the SOB and throw him in the boat. It was the funniest thing, my dad was on shore just dieing laughing. I don't think I had ever laughed so much once we got it in the boat. Once we got it in the boat the guy was scarred of the fish. I guess if you hadn't ever seen anything that big it would be a little scary. We caught over 300 lbs of catfish over the week we were there. It was a great fishing trip and one I will always remember.

It was an opening day of trout season that every 9 or 10 year old kid in Pennsylvania dreams of. A little chilly, but not too as bad in previous years. Getting to the stream an hour before legal fishing hour to make sure we get the spots we want. Anxiously waiting with baited hook for a chance to catch the first trout of the day. Regardless of the size of fish, you caught the stocked brook and rainbow trout and went home to have a fish fry.

That day though, was different. My brother actually hooked the fish first. A nice 16-inch rainbow, easily one of the biggest in the hole. After a bit of a fight, the trout fell off. Minutes later, I had him on and landed him. We were old enough to know that catch and release was the "sporting" thing to do, but it was the biggest trout I'd ever caught! And to my elementary-school mind, I needed to take that fish home.

I regretted that decision almost immediately. Within a few more minutes, I was hooked up with an even bigger trout. This one an golden rainbow or palomino trout. I had one-upped myself, and I had a new trophy to take home. I even let my brother hold the rainbow in the picture.

I have been chided, as recently as this past weekend, for not fishing the best trout waters that PA has to offer, even though they are close to home. I'm hoping to change that this spring and summer. But for my home waters, these trout are true trophies, especially for my formative fishing years.

I had a fascinating lunch yesterday with Jim Greene, one of the owners of Waterwisp ("The Ultimate Dry Fly"), who took me through the story and the technology behind Waterwisp. There's a good story re-published on their website from Fly Fisherman magazine that gets to the heart of it, but basically the key to Waterwisp flies is that the hook points up, instead of down, when the fly is skittering on the water, which makes the skitter more lifelike and keeps the hook out of the trout's view. Great stuff.

I just finished another reel that I have been building over the winter. It is another ambassaduer. This one ended up being a bit pricey and as always enjoyable.It has a ct frame, a 6500 c4 spool (balanced), 6500c4 brake plate, 5600c4 side plates that I had to modify for push button casting, a magnetic braking system, abec 7 ceramic bearings, fibered blue yonder brakes, ported power handle, speed bullet to replace the cog gear and end the windmill effect, and 5.3:1 gears for fighting power. I teamed it up with a St.Croix rod and am gonna slay some Pompano!!! pic added at profile

REPORT #1206 "Below the Border" Saltwater Fly-Fishing reports since 1996

East Cape

To clarify the daylight savings time change, it turns out that here in Baja Sur the change actually takes place April 4th.

Weather permitting, offshore fishing Is enjoying an uptick…enough striped marlin to keep things interesting. Sunday one of the Palmas boats landed a 180 pound swordfish.

There are also reports some yellowfin tuna with skipjack mixed in along with rumors of some larger tuna on the outside down below Las Frailes.

Inshore there has been a decent show of roosters, jacks, sierra, pargo and an occasional yellowtail.

One El Nino surprise for March is the Humboldt squid being caught within a mile of shore. Part-time resident John Barley and his son landed five of the squirters in short order near the surface.

With the clean 80° water only six miles off the beach, and the deep blue water out about 18 miles, the fishing is still fairly slow. Our bread and butter fish for the area, the sailfish, has been averaging less than a fish per day per boat.

However, not is all bleak as Kjell of Sweden fished with Luis on the panga, Gringo Loco, for two days, taking a huge 50 (plus) pound dorado off a partially sunken tree limb. He released an estimated 250-pound blue marlin the next day.

Cali, Captain of the Vamonos II, did get two sailfish on Friday for his clients, and an estimated 110-pound striped marlin. He told me, as well as the other captains, that the seas were very rough on Thursday.

However, the inshore action has been very good. Adolfo on the Dos Hermanos, Cheva on the Dos Hermanos II, and Arturo ????? all have been getting into large jack crevalle. The 15 to 20 pound jacks are coming off trolled rapalas, live bait, and surface poppers, with most of the action down near the white rocks. …Ed Kunze

Marlin fishing has remained slow again this week. Still a few more boats were able to find the fish this week, but it was nothing to write home about…at least for those of us who go out all the time. The fish seemed to be concentrated closer to shore than normal; most of the fish were found within three miles of the beach and on both sides of the Cape.

Just like last week, most of the tuna were found quite a long way from home, necessitating a two-hour or longer cruise to get to where you might find some. Out by the Seamounts reports were that bigger schools had small fish, smaller schools had bigger fish. Not pretty water getting there though. My friend who made it out there said he was the only boat there. There are always exceptions though, and on Saturday there was a pod of dolphin found three miles off of Chileno Beach that had loads of football tuna, 5- to 20-pound fish, and the first dozen boats to get there had a blast!

Just a few yellow flags were flying this week on Wednesday with the heavy winds and rough seas the dorado came out to play. The fish were found offshore on the Cortez side by boats searching for tuna and there were a few very small ones found in close to the beach, as well as on the Cortez side of the Cape.

Inshore fishing: sierra bite busted wide open on the Pacific side late in the week. Same again this week with some boats coming in with 30 or 40 fish. There are also reports of the snapper bite picking up…George and Mary Landrum

You never know where important stories might surface. I looked at The Drudge Report this morning and there was a big blue advertisement across the top with the headline: "Jane Lubchenco's NOAA, shreds documents, per inspector general." (see bottom of this post)

The add was placed by "Gwylim McGrew, a concerned citizen" and it linked to a pretty remarkable story in the Gloucester Daily Times (Massachusetts) about congressional hearings last week surrounding possible misdeeds by the Dale Jones, head of the NOAA's enforcement division and a former chief of police in Hagerstown, MD, and his staff of 200 officers.

Jones is under investigation by US Commerce Department's Inspector General, Todd Zinser, for reportedly authorizing a "mass" shredding of his department's documents last November and inappropriate use of funds in the "Asset Forfeiture Fund" collected from commercial fishermen in connection with enforcement actions. Zinser has yet to release his report, but in one of the hearings, The Gloucester Times reports, NOAA's Lubchenko noted "It does not look good."

Jones has said that the document shredding was routine event, but Zinser does not appear to agree. Reports the Gloucester Times: "What came to mind," Zinser told the (congressional) panel, "I wonder what the Office of Law Enforcement would have thought if a fishing company did the same thing."

According to the article, the investigation was ordered by Lubchenco after congressional delegations from Massachusetts and North Carolina asked her to investigate allegations that Jones and his staff engaged in heavy handed law enforcement directed against commercial fishermen.

The paper quotes North Carolina Republican Walter B. Jones:

"Overzealous enforcement — we heard about it for 15 years and tried to get the IG to look at it," (Jones) told the (congressional) panel. "A highly regulated clientele and a dysfunctional relationship."

The North Carolina congressman also noted that the size of the agents' workforce is up 40 percent, while the volume of landings is down 5 percent.

In North Carolina, he noted, fishermen's catch landings have fallen 66 percent.

"There are more law enforcement officers policing a shrinking industry," he said.

The ad on Drudge is below, the question is: who placed it? Anyone know Gwilym McGrew? Not sure if it's a man or woman, but apparently McGrew places ads to bring attention to articles he/she thinks are important. He responded to a Politico writer,
who sought his identity in connection with another add he/she placed elsewhere on the Internet: "I am an individual just doing this on my own. No, I am not part of any organization. Just one guy pissed off at modern journalism." Well, he not pissed off at The Gloucester Times but he appears to have an issue with NOAA's law enforcement branch.

In a storyline similar to the U.S. hockey "Do You Believe in Miracles" team in 1980, the Team USA ice fishing team used home-ice advantage to capture the World Ice Fishing Championship this past weekend in Rhinelander, Wisc.

Edging out Poland and Latvia, it was only the second time that USA even entered the team competition. Last year, the Americans finished last. Mike Boedeker of Lansing, Mich. also secured the individual gold medal. Making it an American sweep at this year's championship.

From the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:

"We thought we'd be happy with something in the middle of the pack," said team captain Mike McNett of Lombard, Ill. "Tell me I'm not imagining it."

There it was, the crystal WIFC first place trophy, as brilliant as the ice of Boom Lake under a late winter sun and as solid as the congratulatory hugs of fellow competitors.

Murmurs of "USA, USA" rose from the standing room-only crowd in the weigh-in tent in Hodag Park as the result became apparent.

The U.S. finished first, with 39 points in the International Angling Confederation scoring system. Points are determined by weight of fish caught and the order in which anglers finish in the five daily fishing sections. Competition took place from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday and Sunday on Boom Lake, a flowage on the Wisconsin River.

well i took my kids fishing in my little honey hole. we had a blast my 8 year olds in cub scout and he will be getting has fishing belt loop. my 6 year old cought his first bass he reeled it in but needed help getting on land so dad give him a hand. it was the best day of my life. will put a pic. up later.

Fished the past two days with Padraic and Jeff from Massachussetts. The Salmon River has been steadily rising from all the runoff which has affected the fishing a little. The bite was a bit slow but we managed to land six on Friday and four on Saturday with quite a few more lost. The Sandys are high and muddy along with many of the other tributaries but it will bring in many more fresh fish. Here are some pics from the two days

We caught a ton of stripers on this fishing trip. we were using mostly hairball lures on wire line. We caught some Bluefish but we released them all. This is a picture of a striper that my brother josh caught on a hairball lure.
