Find New Sporting Resources During Wildlife Refuge Week
We’ve all got our favorite places to hunt and fish, but if you want to try someplace new this season, check out a wildlife refuge near you.
Maintained by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the National Wildlife Refuge System is dedicated to the conservation of fish and wildlife and their habitat. Hunting is permitted on more than 300 national wildlife refuges and at 36,000 waterfowl protection areas, while quality fishing opportunities are available in more than 270 national wildlife refuges.
The TRCP’s conservation mission is inspired by the very man who established the first wildlife refuge system more than a century ago: Theodore Roosevelt. The first refuge, Pelican Island, Fla., was established in 1903. Today, the system encompasses more than 150 million acres, 552 refuges and 37 wetland management districts.
Celebrate National Wildlife Refuge Week, October 11-17, and find a refuge near you. At least one wildlife refuge is located in every state and within an hour’s drive of most major cities – offering sportsmen a welcoming, safe and accessible place to pursue our outdoor traditions.
