Fly fishing report for June 23rd, 2010.

We have covered lots of water in the past two weeks. After finishing the June fishing on the White, we headed to the Upper Connecticut and did some scouting in the Bloomfield Vermont area. Water conditions were ok, and we had some real good dry fly fishing. However, the fish ran small. The Brown trout we caught were in the 10 inch range but very pretty and showing all the signs of being wild. We caught rainbows as well, but nothing over a foot. I have to believe there are bigger fish around up there. I will just have to stay after them until I figure it out.

After the upper Connecticut trip we headed for the Middle Connecticut near Sumner's falls. Here we are experiencing very tough conditions. The water is fairly slow and perfect presentations and patterns are a must. Whats going on in this section is really some of the best action of the year. The fish run big in this stretch, some way over the 20 inch mark. In the early morning hours trout have been getting a steady diet of caddis in all shapes and sizes. Once you leave the riffles and fish to trout rising in the slower water, sulfer spinners have been the meal ticket. Now once the sun comes out and it gets hot, they switch again back to the caddis. But, not the same caddis they were eating in the morning. They are preying on Zebra caddis as they migrate from the over hanging limbs to gather water at the shore line. Need I say more, the fish are on the banks and we are catching them. Photo's have been hard to come by, as I fish alone alot. If you are interested in this trip,we meet at 5am don't forget. Get to bed early.

We just recieved some much needed rain this morning and I look for conditions to be excellent atleast for the next week. Give me a call at 802 234 5281 or cell at 603 276 9882.

vttroutbum posted Central Vermont Fly Fishing Report

The last couple of weeks have been ok to good. High sun and warm air temps coupled with the lack of insect activity have made the fishing conditions very challenging. Hatches of March browns, caddis, grey fox,Isonychia's,and sulfers have been seen recently, but not in great numbers. Nymphing and streamers have been very productive during this lull. Having said that the dry fly fishing should pick back up as the Sulfer hatch gets going. Cahills are very important on some of the waters we fish, and that hatch is on the way as well. However the best hatch around these parts is the Zebra caddis hatch. Not all rivers have em,and knowing the ones that do and where will be the key to success. This is also your best chance to catch fish measured in pounds and not inches. Last year we even caught some landlocked salmon during this period. Its an early morning thing also ,so be prepared to be hitting the river at o dark 30 and fishing until 10 am or so. This Zebra Caddis is often mistaken, its name around here is the alder fly. We know its actually Macrostemom zerbratum. The Zebra caddis. Its a member of the caddis family Hydropsychidae. Net spinner. One thing sticks out in my mind when talking about this insect. The fact that these little bugs dangle themselves on a little white string off the rocks and stones of the bottom of the river. From what I understand painting your tippet with White Out can give your presentaion a more natural appearance. I am certainly gonna try that this year on the new nymph patterns we are creating for this hatch. Beyond that the best fishing of the year is certainly yet to come and we had a very mild spring, the fish are around in good numbers. We just need alittle rain. Matt out.
The nicest fish of the season so far. I would guess 21 inches or so. We landed it Friday the 7th,of May. We landed many more but this was the biggest of the day. We never saw another fisherman as usual.

Matt out

vttroutbum posted Hendrickson tour 2010 New York

I just got back from a pretty good trip down to The Wellsville New york area. We fished naples creek on Monday as well as the Cohocton. We were looking for lake run rainbows on the Naples Creek, however the water was very low so we new a fresh run of chrome was not in the cards. So we fished for resident wild rainbows. We landed 10 in a couple of hours, while fishing hares ear nymphs. None to big ,but wild as ever. In case you didn't know wild rainbows are rare in the East,so it was nice to see for sure. Then on to the Cohocton for the Hendrickson hatch. After a short scouting mission during a good hatch of duns I managed to find two nice fish working the hatch and caught them both. They were browns and apparently not wild. Oh well got my first dryfly fish of the season. A gorgeous river and well worth the stop. Tuesday we floated the Gennesse below Wellsville, and hit the hatch right on the head. We landed 9 and missed three. This was a piece I had never fished. Boy was I surprised when I landed that first fish over the 20 inch mark. It was a huge rainbow, she ate the hares ear as well. So feeling no pressure we floated down river looking for risers the hatch was on. Finally there in the distance a rise, then another, and another. Clip off went the nymphs and indicators and on went the Hendrickson dun. Fish on another 20 inch bow. Then another one. Where are the browns I asked Pep. He responded with fish on and its a brown. It ended up being around the 18 inch mark, fought like mad and jumped twice, rare for a brown. We landed a few more sizable browns in that area then decided to hold out for the spinner fall. As the temperatures dropped so did the Spinners. We fished Red Quills to damn near dark catching a few more quality fish. All in all a great float trip. I know its hard to look at such small trout after the steelhead season, but heck,we got ours on dry flys. Enjoy the pictures and this nice weather.
 Matt out.

What a day. March 7th ,2010. We fished for a couple of hours and landed two. Both rainbows and both over the 20 inch mark. A surefire cure to cabin fever which has set in. See all of you on the water very soon.
 Matt

We got on the water about noon yesterday,we were targeting some of the big browns in the area. We fished not very hard for a few hours and landed two gorgeous rainbows. They both ate a golden demon streamer with an orange throat. I attribute our success yesterday to warming waters and low flows. The bucket was just to small for all of them to hide. Now is the time to fish before the spring runoff comes and we get blown out. Enjoy the first photos of 2010

I can't help think what lies ahead in the spring will again be worth waiting for. We landed some awsome trout last April. After a few years of guiding over these big browns I can gaurentee they will be there again for us to handle. Will you be? That starts in mid april and ends around the first of May. After that we will be on to Hendricsons and in the boats once again. June 1st is primetime here but don't forget some of the best fishing for big trout is in April and May. I am wide open for next spring. Come fish for the day or fish all week.I have plenty of water, many good guides, lots of trout and you quite possibly won't see another angler. I will leave you with 2 pics. The first is a big brown that we caught the last day of the season. The other is the buck I shot in N.H.

Tight lines

 Matt

vttroutbum posted Central Vermont Fly fishing report

October 1st, 2009 10 am 43 degrees and raining. As usual,I got the ole,"are we nuts"? Matt, can we really catch trout today? I assured them that we will have some trout in the boat by days end. I was certain of this. The river had come down nicely from the previous day,and the wind died down as well. The only issue we would have was maybe alittle snow or sleet. We got in about 10:30 and it wasn't till about noon that we had our first fish. The am sleet kept the early bite to a minimum, but soon we had 50 degrees or so and no wind. Trout started rising everywhere. Every bubble line was lit up. We casted to rising trout all afternoon, and we even caught a few. Ken landed a gorgeous rainbow around 19 inches or so also making that the biggest fish of the week by a half inch or so. This was one pretty fish, maybe the best ever colors I have seen locally. Enjoy the photo's,

vttroutbum posted Central Vermont Fly fishing forecast for October 1st,2009

September, 30th, 2009 overcast and 50 degreesThe rain has somewhat stopped, here this Am. The rivers have come up a bit,and thats a blessing. Some of the rivers we guide with marginal floatability are now ready to be floated and fished. We will want to use them all to keep things fresh. I have a sleeper brown trout float trip, that I simple must do. Its alittle bit of a drive but the water is soooo nice. Some wild rainbows in there as well, but browns are the target species in that watershed. Something else to remember. October 1st starts the good atlantic salmon fishing on N.H's Pemme. Each season they put out for our enjoyment brood stock atlantic salmon. So if your near Bristol,N.H. get down to the river and take a seven weight and your black nose daces and woolybuggers you'll do fine. As for Vermont the fall fishing has been outstanding and the worse the weather gets the better the fishing has been. October caddis sizes 12-20, bwo's 18-26,Isonychia's14-16 and yellow stones in 14 have been the dominate insects as of late. Focus on caddis in the am nymphing hours, then switch to Iso's around mid day along with the stones. Most rising trout after 3 pm or so will be on the olives. It would also be a good bet,to take a second rod for dry fly opportunities. Fish will often rise all day this time of year. The colors are not peak yet and I suspect next week to be at or near peak. I have October 2,3,4th open. I also have Matt and Jeff ready to go. So its never to late to book a trip with us, we will get you on the water. If you can't, watch this site for new photo's from this coming fall. Maybe a video or two as well. Matt out

I have a very busy fall of guiding ahead. I will be on the water daily from now until mid October guiding flyfishing trips. Then I am going to hit the woods for Whitetail.

vttroutbum posted Central Vermont Fly fishing reports

Yesterday ,even with the high wind warnings and the fast approaching cold front,we managed to salvage a very tough day on the water. Having brushed this couple up in June, with some big numbers with nymphs, they were ready for the challenge. As we drove down the river to put in the boat the water looked as if it was a cold winter morning. I was sure the fishing would be tough given the conditions, but it looked very tough to me. I chose a stretch that could maybe ,just maybe, keep us out of the wind enough to find the holy grail,"rising trout". On the other hand,if the trout aren't going to rise due to heavy winds and bright sun, then there better be very good nymphing water. Off we went, down to the first likely spot. This was not a spot that I expected to be out of the wind, however I new it held many wild rainbow trout and I would then be able to determine just what the river had instore for us. I spent 20 minutes in a 20 mph sustained wind tying on indicators and tippets while floating down to this telling spot. As we approached it,I kicked Rick out of the back of the boat to fish the top of the run with the nymph rig I had prepared.Cheryl and I eased into the belly of the pool and anchored perfectly without disturbing a thing. The wind was relentless. I looked upstream to Rick to see if he was getting going. I could not believe it,trout were rising everywhere between us. Even in the wind, and the sun, the river was alive. I new the rest of the day would be "butta"as Randy Jones puts it. It was alright. Matt out

vttroutbum posted Central Vermont Fly fishing report

Here is your fly fishing report and forcast for Central Vermont. As of today Wednesday September 15th,2009 all central vermont rivers are at or near seasonal levels. The wading angler should find solitude great flows and plenty of trout coming to the surface. The "river" is fishing well with trout rising sporadically with no one in sight. There just isn't any rush. Fishing remains tecnichle and waters are clear and cold. Trout have been selective the past few days with Isonychia's being most important at times. While other times Yellow quills and olives are the right fly. The hatches of big fly's is coming to a close and the food will start getting smaller. Soon olives in size 24 or smaller is all they will want. Fishing a hacklewing dun size 24 on a 22 hook with a 12 -15 foot 7x leader will work best on the bigger rivers such as the Connecticut and the White. However, this may be the best time to fish the Battenkill river in Arlington Vermont. When your down there stop in to the Orvis store and get the right fly's. No matter where you go the fishing should be outstanding, its been a very very healthy summer for the local waters. Matt out
